How To Enjoy A Day At Tatton Park

I’ve visited Tatton Park near Knutsford, Cheshire on many occasions over the years. It is a beautiful park with a bit of something for everyone from the fabulous Mansion, the avenues of wonderful trees some of which are hundreds of years old; the farm where children get to see the animals; the play park where our children and grandchildren have played for many hours on the swings and climbing frames; the lake… and the list goes on.

Tatton Park belongs to the Egerton Family who have developed the park over several hundred years (it dates back to pre 1598)…

My mum loved Tatton Park and had herself spent many hours walking round the park and exhibiting/selling her fabulous dried flower arrangements and crafts at the ‘Craft Fairs’ which were held at the park during the 1990’s.

She was always obsessed with trees and particularly loved the trees throughout Tatton Park, so when she died, it was a fitting tribute that we had a tree planted amongst a beautiful avenue of trees, looking out across the Cheshire Planes and had her ashes scattered there. Hopefully her tree will be enjoyed for many years by future generations of our family….

As a family (and it’s a large one…), we all enjoy visiting mum’s tree and hold regular ‘family’ trips to ‘visit the tree’ .. It’s never a  solemn occasion and usually involves a picnic and lots of laughter…and even the occasional ‘glass of wine’! On our last trip, we laid out a picnic blanket next to the tree and hadn’t realised it was on an ‘ant hill’ – we all ended up getting nipped by the little blighters – I’m sure mum would’ve been laughing when she saw us all hopping around!

In all the years I’ve visited Tatton Park over the last 50 years, I’ve never paid to go into the ‘formal garden’.. I’m more of a ‘free spirit’ when it comes to gardens and very formal layouts have never been my thing and I assumed that the gardens at Tatton Park would be ‘rather formal’…. How wrong I was!

This summer, Tatton Park held a Roald Dahl Picnic in the Park event, which gave free access into the gardens and encouraged families to enjoy a wonderful picnic in the Estate Gardens and what a very surprising and special day it turned out to be!

The gardens were nothing like I had imagined – they are absolutely magical and we enjoyed a superb few hours meandering our way through the many different areas. They are definitely not the ‘formal’ layout I had envisaged and gave me a ‘lesson in life’ – never judge a book by it’s cover…
