Have You Ever Had A DIY Disaster?

Some of you may have noticed that I’ve not ‘posted’ for a few days and it’s because I’m in the midst of a DIY DISASTER? I’m sure anyone who has suffered a similar ‘plight’ will sympathise when I explain ….

We decided after Xmas that it was time for our kitchen to receive a bit of TLC in the form of a DIY inexpensive Kitchen Makeover.

I did my research via Pinterest (Ha – those PERFECT pictures … ) and I decided that if we renewed a couple of our kitchen base units which after 27 years and several water leaks over the years (don’t ask.. hubby and DIY plumbing don’t match.. but he’s a ‘tryer’ so I can’t complain!), are literally falling apart and then if we added a new kitchen work surface and some Annie Sloan Chalk paint, our kitchen would be ‘transformed’ in the same way as the wonderful ‘makeover pics’ on Pinterest!…

What could go wrong?

…… The Answer…. Pretty Much EVERYTHING and now I’m in the middle of one almighty DIY Disaster!!! Who posts those pictures? I’m going to ‘kill’em’!!!

Having emptied the contents of the kitchen cupboards, my ground floor now resembles Steptoe’s junk yard…  I can’t imagine how we fitted all this crap into the cupboards. It  was like the ’emptying of Mary Poppins Bag’ … it just seemed to keep filling up.. the more I took out, the more there seemed to be to empty. I’m sure it’s not THAT long since I cleared the cupboards out previously!!!

Eventually, my house was filled with the contents of the cupboards – every surface, box, storage crate has been filled up..

Ever the ‘optimist’, at this stage, I was thinking…. Not to worry, it’ll only be a few days and we’ll be all sorted with a beautifully transformed kitchen…

Full of enthusiasm… next it was the old cupboards that would be pulled out….

NOoooooo ……The decrepit old units ripped out and…… SHOCK, HORROR, NIGHTMARE!!!!

Although we’d replaced the doors and work surfaces a couple of times over the years, the base units on one half of the kitchen were the ‘original units’ in situ when we first moved in 27 years ago… I wasn’t quite prepared for the shock of what was behind them when we ripped them out …… Aghhhhh… MINGING!!!!

1960’s orange floral wallpaper in between the crumbling plaster and exposed brickwork, is probably bad enough but add to that, the grease, coagulated food crumbs, dead spiders, snails and slugs that have clearly found there way behind the units over the last 50 years….

Need I say more?

At this point, I’m definitely losing my ‘enthusiasm’ and thinking… WHY DID WE START THIS?

Have you heard the old saying: ‘What the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve over’…

Well it’s true.. I didn’t ‘grieve over the kitchen cupboards’ when I didn’t know what was lurking unseen for 50 years…. BUT NOW I HAVE SEEN – My eyes are WIDE OPEN!!! I’m definitely ‘Grieving’….

Being the ‘thoughtful’ person I am, I wouldn’t EVER show you the nightmarish sights that I was subjected to when the cupboards were removed… Not least because I’d be ‘mortified!’ ……

Next step… tiles to be removed… “Don’t worry Wendy … we can always make this hole in the plaster into a serving hatch through to the dining room” says hubby…

My enthusiasm has definitely ‘disappeared completely’ now… as when hubby tried to get the tiles off the wall, he also ‘broke’ a hole in the stud wall…  I suppose you could say ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ when it comes to requiring a plasterer…

I’m now managing with a sink very precariously ‘propped up’ on a stick and tomorrow, we’re going to ‘play at camping’… the camping stove seems the ‘best option’ now that the cooker has had to be dismantled due to a leaking gas pipe. In fact, it’s a shame our tent had to go for repair or that’s where I’d be living!…

Indeed I could be tempted to leave the ‘gas leak’ and let the ‘kid’ who tried to set our hedge on fire a couple of days ago come and use his lighter in the house! …. just a thought!

I’m sure you’ll understand why there’s been no time for blogging, as the last few days has been ‘deep cleaning time’….

Oh and did I mention…. It’s now  ‘mopping up time’… the Stop Tap has just Sprung A LEAK!!!

Have you ever had one of those days where you just want to bury your head back in the sand and wait for it all to go away? Yep – that’s me now…

Cheap makeover?

Not a cat in hells chance..

“Where’s the ‘f***ing plumber” …. Excuse my language.. I don’t swear often but….. HELP – I wanted a beautiful ‘makeover’ kitchen not Noah’s Ark!

Bless him… (NOT)… hubby keeps telling me “It’s ok… it always looks worse before it gets better!” ….but at this moment, I’m not seeing even a chink of “Light at the end of the tunnel”. All I’m seeing is £money flying out of the window… oh and a Pig just flew past the window too!!!

I’m now on my 3rd tester pot of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint…. and after my son and my hubby laughed their socks off at my ‘wonderful painting’, I’ve decided to throw in the towel and am now undertaking further Internet Research… this time into the best and CHEAPEST replacement kitchen doors!

I’m sure I’ve mentioned previously, that when it comes to Vision Boarding, you don’t always receive your ‘vision’ in the way you expected, so I’m clinging onto Hope…

I’m hoping that this is one of those occasions where it all has to go ‘disastrously wrong’, for the final ‘outcome’ to be amazing and that very soon I’ll be looking at my ‘vision board’ and ticking off the ‘beautiful new kitchen’ …..

The only problem is that I’m clinging on by my fingernails.. and after 3 days of ‘Deep Cleaning’ they are looking decidedly ‘raggy’ and ready to rip off at any moment….

If I don’t drown in the ‘sea of water’ before the plumber arrives, hopefully I’ll be resuming ‘normal blogging’ very soon and in the meantime… Wish Me Luck! Oh and PLEASE – fill me in on your DIY Disasters…. if only to make mine seem not quite as bad!

Hopefully, at some point, these lovely new ‘caddies’ will have a beautiful shelf to sit on….

And …. anyone who like me is tempted by the Pinterest Makeovers…. DON’T DO IT….

When I downloaded the photo’s for this post, I came across this photo that my granddaughters and niece had taken without my knowledge.. It was probably when I was in the midst of mopping, steaming and scrubbing no doubt, and it pretty well sums up my thoughts to  those people who successfully ‘made over’ their kitchens and posted their ‘perfect pictures’ on Pinterest….

I couldn’t agree more girls!

  1. Wendy we have all been there!!! My husband and I flipped houses for a few years. It is not easy and not quick. If it can go wrong it just might. I have shocked him and he has knocked me off of a scaffolding thru a floor. We lived to tell about it. LOL.

    1. Haha Pamela… I’ve ‘shocked’ my hubby a few times.. although not with electricity…. YET! haha.. We sat surrounded with devastation last night and laughed our socks off… life’s never boring that’s for sure! Although on this occasion it may have been ‘hysteria’.. hehe! Well done you though Pamela for ‘flipping’ those houses.. I’m tempted to start doing that myself .. even after our DIY Disasters! I was thinking about you a lot when I was emptying my cupboards though as the ‘plastic tupperware’ was definitely breeding! x

    1. I’m a great believer in ‘Feel the Fear and do it anyway Bella’ – however, on this occasion I wish I’d listened to my instincts! haha.. We’ll get there in the end .. just not ‘on the cheap’ – yikes! x

  2. Wendy, oh my gosh! I’m sending positive thoughts and blessings your way and for your whole kitchen. The photo of your granddaughters and niece is perfect. If there’s a good quote for this, maybe you can find it for inspiration? ❤ One thing that J-R (my spiritual mentor) has mentioned is to see the humour in situations that just don't seem funny. This may or may not help. 🙂 Smiles and big hugs to you Wendy – hang in there. Blessings, Debbie

    1. Your mentor is absolutely right Debbie – when all else fails – have a good laugh. Me and hubby sat laughing about our plight last night .. although I’m not sure it wasn’t ‘hysteria’ setting in.. haha xx – Thanks for your blessings! xx

    1. – It can Debbie – or maybe it’s just the reflection of all the different colour paints I’ve used! haha… You’re my ray of sunshine this morning though – thank you! x

  3. Hahahaha, sorry this made me laugh. I come across this often in my job as decorator so I get your frustration. I also feel sorry for you tho. I would have helped you if I was there. Btw, I don’t want to burst your bursted bubble even more but those fancy schmancy hoity toity wishy washy paints are usually crap. Like Farrow and Ball. They have fancy cans but the paint is no good. I don’t know the UK brands but it’s best to go for a regular pro paint. And clean with ammonia before you do any painting, especially in a kitchen. Good luck there!

    1. Oh yes MR P… it’s that BAD that even hubby and I were laughing last night…. hysteria has set in!! Painting the cupboards is OFF the agenda… it’s definitely replacement doors… and yep.. where were you when I needed you .. haha.. Thanks for the advice – better late than never . ..hehe xx

      1. Lol! I didn’t know that you were decorating, otherwise I would have given you some advice. I’m sure it will end up looking nice. You can always buy a new house if it doesn’t lol 😂

        1. Seriously Mr P – Moving house WAS discussed last night however, I’m not sure many people will buy it with a hole in the wall, the sink propped on a piece of wood, no kitchen units and a WET floor! haha .. Next time – I’ll come to you for advice first and you can remind me ‘NOT TO DO IT’! xx

          1. Disorder before order is usually the motto when starting on something. Reminds me of that show Property Ladder. Just bulldoze the house and start from scratch haha. A hole is easily fixed with a piece of plaster board cut to size. Screw it on, plaster it and Bobs your uncle. Is your hubby not handy? Or your son? Wet floor? Don’t they use the toilet? Lmao 😂

          2. Hahaha – LMAO too now! Yep – son came round last night – he’s pretty ‘handy’ but on this occasion was no help whatsoever as all he could do was Laugh! Looks like all the ‘men’ in my life have picked up my ‘inappropriate’ sense of humour!… serves me right! Now even you are laughing at me Mr P – it must be catching! x

  4. Oh Wendy, I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry through this. 😑 I’ve been thinking about you and wondering how it was all going. If it’s any consolation my hubby is a handy man and we’ve still had our own share of disasters. But hang in there (and I don’t mean literally) you’ll get it all sorted and then, months from now, you’ll look back and have a good laugh. In the meantime, happy camping! (Sorry, couldn’t resist) 😄 Big hugs xo

    1. haha Miriam! Yes we both sat down last night surrounded by devastation (these photo’s really don’t do justice to reality!!!) and laughed – it was either laugh hysterically or cry… laughter is always the best medicine! It’s a good job hubby and I share our ‘warped’ sense of humour! I’m hoping the old sayings come good in the end and it will be a case of ‘all’s well that ends well’ or ‘good things come to those who wait’… I’ve waited 27 years for a decent kitchen so hopefully I won’t have to wait too much longer! In the meantime… thank goodness for the camping stove! At least it’s better than when we went 3 months without a toilet while the bathroom was being done!…. I won’t mention what DIY gadgets helped us during that period! haha.. Hope you’re ok Miriam and had a much more pleasant weekend than we did? Big hugs returned with a smile xx

      1. Thank goodness you both have a sense of humour Wendy. 😃 Never mind, just see this as a big test of character, you’re most probably going to have the best looking kitchen in Manchester by the time it’s finished. As for 3 months without a toilet? Oh, the mind boggles! Hugs back with a smile on this balmy Melbourne night xo

        1. It certainly is Miriam! It definitely keeps us going through the trials of our many DIY Disasters over the years… Is there anything in Wayne Dwyers book about learning from our mistakes?…..
Yep – It’s a good job my sister lives next door as she provided our ‘bathroom’ facilities… good job she loves us! It’s a glorious sunny but very chilly morning here in Manchester and I’m off for a trip to the tip now while you enjoy your balmy night – I’ll be having a ‘barmy’day! x

          1. Must admit, my hub has a wicked sense of humour too which is a good thing. And yes, I’m sure there’s something in my book on learning from mistakes, only problem is I’m reading it n bed too late and keep falling asleep. So then I have to go back and re-read it. As I’ll probably do in a couple of hours! Enjoy your adventure to the tip! x

          2. Haha – thank goodness they know us so well Miriam… That is SO frustrating… one page and then Zzzzzzzzz – snoring loudly. I do actually feel sorry for my hubby! (although I’ll never admit it to him..) x

  5. Oh boy !
Here in Spain, a friend of mine who lives by a dry stream decided to make an arched fireplace in an old three foot thick stone wall. He cut out the shape with a circular saw which pomptly fell onto the kitchen floor releasing 1 million round stones from the stream bed which were a filler between the kitchen and salon walls from floor to roof. The kitchen ended up waist deep in stones. 🙂 ❤

    1. hahahahahahahaa – laughing VERY Loudly… I feel so much better now… even if it’s at your friend’s expense! Hillarious!!! I can ‘see’ those stones… makes my little ‘hole’ seem so much smaller… Thanks for cheering up my morning Ralph! Have a fab day… xx

  6. OH HO HO- Have we ever been there!! Reminds me of that Discovery Channel episode where the surgeons were separating siamese twins. All I could think of as I looked at the human “puzzle pieces” was how do these docs not have a massive panic attack?? I mean there was CLEARLY no turning back on THAT project!! It all worked out in the end by the way- the twins were separated… and our renovation was finally completed. I’m sure it will work out for you too, just breathe!

    1. Hehehe – thanks Cindy! It’s a good job we’ve got a ‘sense of humour’… although to be fair I suspect our ‘laughter’ last night was bordering on Hysteria! Thanks so much for your reassurance which is very much appreciated! xx

  7. Oh, Wendy this made me laugh! I’m sure it will come out well now that is was first a nightmare! Thats the nature of the business my husband and I do anyhow ~ it always seems like a disaster before it comes together. Wishing you better days in this endeavor, keep us updated. x

    1. Thanks Victoria – we laughed although I’m not sure it wasn’t hysteria!! hahaha.. Now the decision is made that we have no alternative to replace the kitchen… I think it was the Law of Attraction at work as that’s what I really wanted in the first place and had cut pictures out on my vision board!.. The power of the subconscious mind… I’ll definitely post some finished pictures xx

  8. If I had the skill, I would do it myself as it is very difficult to find trustworthy builders. Hope you don’t have to eat too many takeaways and microwave meals before your kitchen (& your equilibrium) is restored! Lots of love xx🙏🏻

    1. Thanks so much – bless you you’re so lovely! At the moment the cooker is still connected and ….. I’ve left hubby at home facing all the devastation while I’m in London being filled with inspiration! …. oops! Much love xx
