How To Create a dual use ‘BLOG’ Station & Bedroom in a very small space

Having ‘dabbled’ and had some fun producing some very amateur videos for my blog and Youtube Channel over the last few months, I’ve decided that it’s time to ‘get serious’ and try and step up to create better quality VLOG’s and put my ‘new’ Canon  camera to better use. Camera review – Canon G7X Mark 2 Camera Review… (well sort of!).

Although I’ve still got a lot to learn still about the camera, lighting and video editing etc., creating a more specific space at home felt like the right way to move forward, if I want to be more serious with the VLOGs.

The problem being that I don’t have a ‘spare room’ to dedicate solely as a Blog Station.

Our Spare Bedroom is used most weekends by our granddaughters when they sleepover but also is a bit of a ‘dumping ground’ and needed a clear out.

With a very low budget and minimal space, I decided to do a makeover of this tiny room, to create a dual purpose space that would improve the ‘bedroom space’ whilst also creating a specific area in the house for me to set up as a ‘Blog Station’.

All that was needed was for me to don my ‘decorating gear’ and get cracking… not a good look as I’m sure you’ll agree – haha… instagramcapture_3ee10aa4-5fde-4a9d-9093-ab224e1b89e3

Tip: Wearing a Shower Cap may not be a ‘good look’ but it does save the hair from being completely ‘splattered’ with emulsion paint! I don’t know about you, but as a ‘non professional’ decorator, I usually end up covered in paint which takes weeks to wear off – particularly on my hair!!

Colour Scheme:

As the room would be ‘dual purpose’ i.e. A Blog Station & A ‘Sleepover’ Bedroom, I chose a very pale pink for the walls, which would keep the room ‘light’ for blogging, whilst not being quite as stark as pure white would be, for when the girls stay over..

I would normally use white for the woodwork but I’ve noticed that the downside of improving the environmental impact of paint, is that oil based wood paint seems to ‘yellow’ very quickly. (a price that I’m willing to pay if it really does help the environment)…  I therefore opted for a water based paint and for a very pale grey/blue colour instead of white and actually now it’s done, I really like the pale grey/blue against the pale pink walls.

We have a great ‘seconds’ shop locally where they sell damaged tins of paint and I managed to purchase all the emulsion and satinwood paint plus the brushes etc. for less than £25.00.

At zero cost, I acquired an old and rather tatty desk that my sister had uncovered in a garage tidy up and was going to take to the tip. Perfect for my ‘blogging desk’ and so instead of the tip, it headed to my house for a DIY Makeover… I’m on the look out now for a chair to go with it!

Before Photo’s:

After a quick rub down with sandpaper, I applied 2 coats of the water based paint that I had left over from painting the skirting boards and door. I took off the old handles (prior to painting) and added some little crystal handles that I’d purchased a while ago at minimal cost (around £3.00 for a box of 4 in a local ‘thrift’ store) and had put away and forgotten about..

Overall, the desk has turned out really well and fits perfectly into this very small bedroom..

After Photo’s

The desk is brilliant for my granddaughters to use when they sleepover and also doubles up as a great Blogging Desk for me to use during the week. Hopefully as I develop my photography/video skills, it will become a great ‘VLOG’ Desk! I’m hoping to be inspired with lots of: …….

I already had the metal ‘day bed’ which I’d bought from Dunelm Mill a couple of years ago at the bargain price of £69, so all that was required for my mini makeover, was to buy a new duvet cover to match the new colour scheme. Dunelm Mill are difficult to beat when it comes to bedding and they didn’t let me down. I love the ‘day dreamer’ message on the cover and pillow, to inspire my granddaughters to ‘daydream’ when they sleepover!

Daydreaming when I was a child was considered ‘a waste of time’ however, I now believe that daydreaming is crucial to understanding what will bring happiness into our lives.

Daydream away my friends and then ‘take action’ on those daydreams!

Apart from some shelving which still needs to be added, the room is up and running and ready for business!

The girls love their ‘new’ bedroom and I have a great ‘dedicated’ blogging space and can comfortably use either the day bed or the desk to sit at with my laptop to create blog content and to keep on top of my newly organised paperwork.. Tuesday Tidy Up

The whole mini bedroom/blog station makeover has cost less than £100, including new lights, bedding and decorating materials and I’m really pleased that I now have a ‘creative’ blog/vlog space, that has also improved the small bedroom for my granddaughter’s weekly sleepovers.

The only thing I need to add now is some ‘proper’ photographic lighting and then I’m all set for creating some regular ‘VLOG’ content too! I’m not sure what that content will be yet though…

I’m tempted to do some ‘makeup’ videos for the ‘older’ woman and as I’ve also been a hypnotherapist for over 15 years, I could do something connected to personal development too – What do you think? I’d love to know – leave me a comment below to let me have any ‘VLOG’ content suggestions….

    1. HAha – glad to be of service Osyth! There’s only one thing though… if you use the ‘tip’ – you have to post a picture – I can’t be the only one to make a fool of myself.. hehe! Glad you like the space.. x

  2. Love your new room! WOW. I just snagged a trunk organizer from Christmas that I have turned into a filing box for all papers, photos, journals that I need for the book I am co-authoring as well as future blog posts! I soooo know the feeling of getting something in place for a need that there is no space for! Make-up for mature women, check out Cindy Joseph BOOM sticks. She is a make-up artist, turned model at 60, turned entrepreneur at 61 of her own make-up line of just THREE sticks to do all your makeup. Now thats brilliant! She only sells her product on her webpage and it is all organic. I love the products. (I do add mascara and eyebrow pencil.) Best of luck with the vlog- that scares me to death! -Kim

    1. Oooo that trunk sounds fab! I love making use of old furniture etc. it has such character and history that comes along with it.. I’m sure having such a fab filing box will inspire you to do some more fabulous posts and ‘authoring’ of your book!
Thanks for the tip – I’ll definitely check on Cindy Joseph – MUCH appreciated! x

  3. This was such a great post Wendy, what an amazing transformation. You did an awesome job. I had to laugh at that photo of you in a shower cap, that’s me too when I have to paint and protect my hair! In fact my hub was joking the other day saying he nearly bought me a new shower cap for Christmas but couldn’t find the right one. 😏
Anyway, you have a lovely looking room now to enjoy, well done. And I’m off to back track through your blog to find your post on creating a vision board because that’s HIGH on my list of things I want (and need) to do. Big hugs to you my clever creative friend. xo

    1. Haha – yep Miriam – not the best ‘look’ but definitely a ‘good tip’ for any fellow DIY decorators out there! Good job our hubby’s love us.. hehe! I’m pleased with the result – particularly the desk which was going to the tip! I just need to find a nice little chair to go with it now.. If you scroll down to the bottom section of my blog, there’s a search facility.. put in vision board and it should bring up 3 posts – dream board is the first.. https://brilliancewithin.com/2016/04/26/how-to-create-a-dream-vision-board/ Happy Dreaming my lovely friend.. xx

      1. Thanks Wendy, I’m still in bed on my phone (having a lazy morning) and it’s a bit harder but I’ve finally found the first one already. Looking forward to getting some materials and getting stuck into it! Must get up soon. 😊 xo

          1. That’s okay Wendy, enjoy the holiday. Now you’ve got me intrigued about my parcel. Is there a shower cap in there, haha. 😊 And how could I possibly forget to feed my Lamby (‘little’ she’s not anymore!) xo

  4. Love this, so much fun, and creative. How nice a place for blogging. I blog on my bed, dinning room table, in front of the TV. I tried the study desk in the box room – but I think I just need space to spread out and make a mess.

I am visiting your site from a google search – rather than mobile or wp reader, you have a great looking site.

    1. Thanks Bella – much appreciated.. I was messing with this new header but am not sure whether I’m going to keep it or not yet so I appreciate your feedback. I’m the same at the moment when I’m working on blog posts – it can be anywhere in the house but if I do expand with the VLOGs, I need a more specific space hence my little makeover.. I hope your parcel arrives soon.. it should definitely arrive tomorrow so if it doesn’t, let me know! x

  5. Wow, Wendy! This came out so so well! I absolutely love makeovers like you have done here, being resourceful and creative. The desk is like a whole new piece and the knobs really show it off. I am excited to see your Vlogs and watch you develop your photography and video skills, both areas I aim to grow my own knowledge as well. You know I use to get written up in school for daydreaming and I still do it to this very day so I adore the bedspread!!! What a breathe of fresh air! You’ve inspired me that is for sure!

    1. How lovely Victoria. Thanks for your love support and encouragement which I VERY much appreciated. I wish you great success with your video skills although I think you are already a brilliant photographer! Daydreaming – it’s just such a wonderful and inspiring thing to do so good for you and I loved the message for my granddaughters too! Much appreciated xx

          1. I shall. My farther used to say we love grandchildren more than our children.
I asked why? He said, cause with grandchild we do not have many responsibilities.
Wendy did you read my other reply to your comment.
By the way there are three posts for you to see, the top three,I am sure you will enjoy. At my end.

          2. That’s so true Shiva.. Your father was wise.. I’m not sure it’s love more but it is a different love because as a ‘nanny’ I can just spend time enjoying life with them rather than having to ‘teach them’ with school work, homework, or grumble about tidying their rooms. I think also, I look back and realise how quickly that time passed and I wish I’d known then what I know now with my own children… I’ve missed those comments I think so will back track and have a read! much appreciated.. xx
