Makeup: DIY Disaster – Beware this contains unpleasant images!

Oh dear – I’ve had a DIY Beauty Mask Disaster!!!

Picture the scene….

My granddaughters were having their usual weekend sleepover and decided on Saturday morning that we should set up a beauty shop in my lounge. Needless to say, I was their first customer.

We decided it would be a great idea to make a ‘natural beauty mask’ to help Nanny….and thanks (or not in this case) to a Google search, we found a simple mask that would be fun and easy to make and would help to remove those ‘blackheads’ – yes I know – unpleasant thought, but I do have them!!

And as you can see from this little clip – when G is in the beautician seat, the customer doesn’t get much choice! (I think I may need to give some lessons in the art of customer service!)

So – Back to the agreed facemask….

List of ingredients: (DEFINITELY NOT recommended for use)

  • Egg White (seems harmless to me)
  • Lemon Juice (I remember using this on my face regularly in the 70’s)
  • Honey (antibacterial properties so I’m told..)

What could go wrong?

WARNING…. WARNING…..WARNING…..

I’m sure you’ll agree – this is NOT A GOOD LOOK…

The mask was carefully applied with a brush and started to tighten nicely as it dried… no stinging was felt…. (bare that in mind)

  • After 10 minutes (well maybe 20 mins – I did get a bit distracted and forgot to remind the beautician that the mask should be removed after 10 – learning lesson – set a timer!!)
  • Once removed my skin felt quite good – nice and ‘tight’….. “Oh yes – it’s worked really well” I thought…

UNTIL SEVERAL HOURS LATER!!!!! WHEN……

The skin around my eyes started to sting and then burn and I looked in the mirror and they looked liked wrinkled prunes!

LOOK AWAY NOW IF YOU HAVE A SENSITIVE STOMACH……

….. Aghhhhh – all that work on adding moisture into my skin using EXPENSIVE eye creams AND anti-ageing moisturisers all wiped out!!!!

It was pretty horrific and I reckon it added 10 years to my age!!!! Now – when I wrote the poem Let the world see the real you! – I didn’t have ‘this look’ in mind!!!

What should I do (other than panic…)? It’s now Saturday night – beauty shops are all closed….. Maybe hospital …. no better not – the NHS is already stretched to breaking point – I’m not sure they’ll be interested in my ‘wrinkles’….. Panic some more….

THEN – an Ahah moment… not not hahaha – I definitely wasn’t laughing! This was that moment that comes from sheer panic when suddenly you get that ‘lightbulb’ moment!

I KNOW – COLLAGENMaybe that will help!!

The hunt was on… drawers and baskets emptied out.. I’m sure I have some somewhere…. Some RIO Beauty Collagen patches that I used with my RIO Beauty 60 Second Facelift Machine http://www.riobeauty.co.uk/60-second-face-lift-plus.html (no affiliation) and which I still use regularly to control my snoring (that’s another story…. 60 Second Facelift or Miracle Snore Cure? & Result of the Miracle Snore Cure Test )

PHEW…. Found them!

AND …… RESULT….

Definitely some improvement as you can see on these before and after photo’s:

So Thanks RIO Beauty – not only did you save my marriage… (yep the snoring story), you’ve now saved my wrinkles too!

I don’t have to hide away for 1o years now and can go on to live a ‘normal’ life!

Well – what’s normal? – not sure I’ve ever fitted into that category, but you get my drift don’t you! Paper Bag over my head no longer needed (although not sure hubby agrees…)

MORALE OF THIS CAUTIONARY TALE…..

  • Don’t believe everything you read on a Google Search
  • Never use LEMON JUICE on your skin if you’re aged over 40 (or maybe younger…)
  • Always have some Collagen Patches to hand … just in case!

Post Disaster Note….

3 days later…. Skin still feeling very dry like sandpaper and I’ve run out of Collagen Patches… replenishment order to be placed!

  1. Oh no! I’m sure I’ve heard milk is good but Cyclax do a really rich moisturiser (lanolin-free) that’s nice and light on the skin round your eyes but still does the job. Hope you’re recovering 🙂 xx

    1. Thanks Samantha – what a nightmare! It’s dried out the skin all over my face which is now starting to ‘flake’ – definitely not a good look!! yikes… Thanks for the tip and I’ll have a look out for that moisturiser tomorrow before I turn into a complete ‘lizard’! x

  2. What a blinking NIGHTmare! I wonder what the issue was …. I mean which ingredient was the culprit? Hopefully you are on the road to smooth supple skin again and maybe no more experiments? x

    1. I’m pretty certain it was the lemon juice Osyth – I think I must have left it on too long and it really ‘burnt’ my skin! It still feels like sandpaper now! You’re right – it was/is a Nightmare – all my hard work down the drain in an instant! yikes… xx

  3. OMG! It looks so painful!! Apart from occasionally applying a cray mask, I don’t do any beauty mask because of my laziness. So lemon juice is no-no for masking? I definitely bear it in mind as my skin is on the sensitive side…😭

    1. You’re absolutely right.. I got carried away with the ‘fun’ of the beauty shop but NEVER again…. We’re sticking to the ‘post office and sweet shops’ in future! I’ve been putting some almond oil on which is helping but will give the olive oil a try too.. Thanks! x

    1. You’re absolutely right and lesson definitely learned the hard way…. My skin is still suffering – not just round the eyes but all over… I’m like a snake shedding it’s skin! Yikes… Never Again!!! haha – I have to laugh or I might just cry…. x

    1. Thanks Barbara – I know – who’d think a bit of lemon juice could burn my skin like that in a ‘fun game’… Yikes. I’m sat here in bed with coconut oil plastered on my eyes and face.. Haha – definitely not a good look! x

  4. Oh dear, not a good experience by the sounds of it. I can remember using lemon juice on my hair to add highlights to it many years ago but I can’t say I’ve ever used it on my skin. How are you feeling now?

    1. Hahah – Miriam… I used it on my hair too! I’m feeling extremely ‘flaky’… not a good look!… Every cloud has a silver lining though – One of my ‘eye wrinkles’ that was pretty deep definitely looks miles better – not sure if it was the collagen or if the lemon has been like a chemical peel! .. We’ll see how long that lasts! x

    1. Haha – thanks Andy… I’m glad it gave you some amusement!! Hey… update on the mask.. although a nightmare initially I’m sure my ‘laughter lines’ aka WRINKLES.. have improved – I think it was like having a chemical peel… not that I’m recommending it to you because obviously you haven’t got any wrinkles Andy… Great to have you pop over and oddly I was thinking I need to do some ‘catch up’ viewing on your too.. really sorry I’ve not popped across for a while, I’ve had a mad few weeks so will be on a major catch up over Xmas.. Hope your all sorted and presents all wrapped under the tree? (mine aren’t.. thank goodness for internet shopping!) xx

      1. A chemical peel? Mercy LOL I’ve got loadsa lines. I use them to show my students how Western people use their faces to express themselves. I say the word ‘really’ in a number of different ways and change the expression each time and then get them to do it. Most of them cant as they dont often change their foreheads. My forehead has a tonne of lines >> no worries about visiting. I am totally the same these days. I’m just off sick so have the time to meander around WP

        1. Haha LOL!! You have the answer to those forehead lines then… slap on my recipe and watch them fade away!! hehe… (just don’t hold me responsible for the pain and subsequent peel … ouch!). I didn’t realise that how we use our expressions and face muscles is so different there in China… I hope you’re OK Andy and not too poorly? .. and no Xmas in China… at least your saving yourself a few grey hairs and a couple of extra wrinkles..
Take care of yourself while you’re feeling ‘off’ and I’ll be on a catch up very soon xx
