How to create a glitzy bathroom..

Do any of you remember Playschool on Children’s BBC when you were young.. Well if you do, you may agree that this is my chance to say…“What’s behind the …..ROUND WINDOW…..”

I took a lot of stick from my family when I said we need to add some glitzy glamour to our bathroom and that this included a full refurbishment, getting rid of the bath and going ‘all black’… Yikes – the debate was on, with lots of different ‘family’ views on colour scheme etc… I won the debate and therefore take full responsibility!! Like it or Hate it…..

With some fabulous sparkly mirrors and a splash of white and silver, I was delighted with the result of our ‘nearly’ all black bathroom. Sadly I haven’t got any ‘before’ photo’s but take my word for it…. “It was LONG OVERDUE!!!”

The original bathroom was very small, with an over the bath shower which constantly leaked and caused numerous water stains on the ceiling below.. No matter what we tried, the seal around the bath always ending up leaking and this was a big deciding factor in our decision to get rid of the bath completely..

We also had a separate toilet which was tiny and although it was handy when the kids were young to have the two separate rooms, it was much better to gain the extra space by knocking down the dividing wall to open up the space, now there is less ‘demand’ for the loo…

I rarely used the bath (I’m not dirty.. I just prefer a shower..) and although hubby did like a good long soak, he agreed that he was prepared to forgo his bath in the interest of ‘design’ haha.. I think he does still miss that weekly soak though and I know for some people this would be a ‘nightmare’… each to their own..

The tiles we used are black porcelain, with a feature wall of small mosaic style tiles which are VERY sparkly and the ‘rainbow’ effect within the tiles are picked out in the new leaded light round feature window.

The round window had been covered over for years and was re-discovered when we starting knocking the old tiles off the walls and we decided to retain it as a feature in the shower area and added the custom made leaded light window, which I love and get pleasure from every time I go into the bathroom..

The accessories, including the glitter mirror, corner cabinet and towel holders etc.  were from NEXT Homeware, as were the lovely black towels which have a sequin band running across the bottom-I didn’t really expect these to wear very well but actually they’ve outlasted quite a few other towels over the last 2 years. I started off telling the family that these were for ‘display only’…. Hmmm – that didn’t last long!

Take a peek .. ‘through the round window’, at my glitzy bathroom, in the video below and let me know what you think…. Please leave me a comment!

    1. Don’t be deceived Bella – there’s lots still to do in the rest of the house but the bathroom was VERY long overdue…. We did work in the house when we first moved in 28 years ago but now those ‘original’ upgrades could all do with doing again… ah well! I am luck though to have a space to call our own – not everybody does.. xx

        1. Yes – probably the most expense out of the way.. well apart from the kitchen but that’s just getting the ‘make do and mend’ – Annie Sloan chalk paint treatment! haha x

  1. So very sleek and stylish Wendy. And I love that round window. When we built our extension years ago my husband made a round frame for our round window and I love it, it’s so unique. Next on our list is a new bathroom … when we can afford it. Enjoy your new space. xo 🙂

    1. Thanks Miriam – we actually did this nearly 2 years ago and I’ve only just got round to taking the pictures.. I do love this room and get a real pleasure from it when I go in. Our original bathroom was pretty horrific so it felt amazing to finally get a bathroom I loved to be in!!! Bryan does miss his soak in the bath though.. bless him! I’m thinking of having a slight ‘update’ with the accessories and add in some splashes of colour for a change… watch this space! I don’t know what it is about a ’round’ window – they are so lovely and you clearly enjoy yours too.. xx

      1. Oh yes, a splash of color will add some zest and new life to your bathroom, no doubt. Sounds so nice. I’d love a new bathroom, ours is also in need of some desperate make-over/demolition! It’s the next thing on the list … xo
p.s. Maybe for Bryan’s next birthday you could buy him (and you!) a voucher at a local spa place. 🙂

        1. Ahh Miriam.. the bathroom was the first room we have ever really ‘made over’ from scratch without trying to ‘penny pinch’ too much which we always have had to do when the kids were younger (as do most people). However, it makes you really appreciate it when finally you have something that is what your envisioned.. At the end of the day though, the time spent with kids and my granddaughters splashing in the old tatty bathroom are memories that I would never want to change! A few new towels will add a nice new touch though! x I’ve told Bryan he can build a new ‘Brilliance Within Hut’ in our back garden (which is only tiny..) big enough to fit a bath in! – haha!!! He’s seriously tempted… Fortunately my sister lives next door and still has a bath so occasionally when he’s ‘desperate’ he goes and has a good soak there instead.. What are families for if not sharing our baths – haha! x

          1. Absolutely! I love the idea of a “Brilliance Within Hut” in the back garden, that’s ingenious! 🙂 Our friends have a huge hot tub in their backyard which we frequent quite often (with our bathers on, of course) and it’s blissful … even in winter. As you said, what are family ‘and friends’ for if not sharing baths. xo

          2. Oh how fab Miriam.. We talked about a ‘hot tub’ but not sure the winter Mancunian freezing cold rainy nights would really appeal to tripping across the back garden ‘naked’ – (well maybe trunks.. )… haha – Although I have to say the hot tubs do seem to be catching on here in the UK too.. I suspect Aussie is better suited! xx

  2. I LOVE this. Beautiful. I can see this as a huge selling point when/if you move later. I might spend hours in there if this was in my house…then people would begin to wonder (more than they do now). 😉 Congrats on a job well done. 🙂

    1. Thanks – it’s probably just as well we opted for ‘no bath’ as I would never have seen Bryan again…haha! x Thanks for your lovely feedback – I have to agree – I can’t help but love it too! It was the first room in the house in 30 years that I achieved in reality what was in my head.. Oh crikey – why was ‘black’ in my head … that’s a bit ‘dark’ isn’t it! … x

    1. Ahh – thanks so much and I’m glad you like it.. It took ages to work out how we could tile round the round window and were really delighted with the way it worked out in the end! To be fair… Bryan is missing his bath too and I’ve suggested he puts a ‘Brilliance Within Hut’ in the back garden with a bath in it! haha.. I’m not joking either… xx Thanks for watching the video!

    1. Thanks Larry and I really appreciate it too as it’s probably the first time I had a vision in my head about how I wanted something to look and it ACTUALLY turned out! Thanks for watching the video too. xx

    1. Yes – it’s probably a ‘like it or hate it’ with the black and the tiles on the feature wall do look fabulous against the black though. Thanks for commenting – much appreciated.. x

    1. Thanks Ms A – there’s something about round windows that I love.. it took ages for Bry to work out how he was going to fix the tiles round it though but worth it in the end! xx

    1. Thanks so much Donna – I think it’s a love it or hate it bathroom.. obviously I love it too but recognise that black wouldn’t suit everybody.. I’m glad you like it too! xx
